Yellow is one of the three traditional primary colors, which means the honest answer to “what colors make yellow” is that, in paint, none do. Yellow is a pure starting point rather than a mix.

This guide explains why, the exception in light, and how to make every yellow shade once you have a true yellow. Click any swatch to copy its hex code.

The simple answer: can you make yellow? #

In the traditional red-yellow-blue model used for paint, yellow is a primary color. No combination of paint colors will produce a true yellow.

Yellow is a primary color

The exception: light #

In the RGB light model used by screens, red + green light = yellow. This is why a display can show bright yellow built entirely from red and green pixels.

Red + Green light = Yellow

How to make shades of yellow #

Starting from a true yellow, you can mix a range of tones:

  • Pale yellow: yellow + a little white
  • Orange: yellow + red
  • Mustard / olive: yellow + a little black or purple
Yellow + red = orange
Yellow + black = olive

Common mistakes #

Yellow is delicate: it is easily dulled by almost any other color, because it is so light. Add color to yellow in tiny amounts, and lighten with only a little white, since yellow is already near the top of the value scale.
